ELECTROPHORUS DE VOLTA

THAT IT IS NEEDED
Cardboard of about 25 cm of diameter (better if a disc of aluminum or varnished wood is used); sheet of paper aluminum; handle   insulator (20 cm of plastic tube of pvc); heavy leaf of plastic (to pack covers of books, etc.), wool article, piece of felt of an old hat, etc.

ELECTROPHORUS DE VOLTA

 

INTRODUCTION
This experiment consists of electrostatic equipment, are called electrostatic machines to all the equipment able to generate continuously, remarkable amounts of electrical charges with a electrical high potential. These equipment sempre are llmado the attention, especially in the Fairs of Sciences. Machines as the generator of Van De Graaff, Wimshurst, Kelvin etc. exist But for works in simple laboratories and demonstraciones in the classrooms or the recommended easiest school and more of these machines it is the Electrophorus of Volta.

How For
First um stands out cardboard disc with a diameter of 25 cm. covers one with its faces with paper aluminum, before is due to place in the cardboard a glue as clefa, exceeding near 5cm in all the contour. This excess bends and glues in the other face (before colos are made you cut necessary to facilitate the dog ears). All this task will not be necessary if the aluminum disc could be obtained.
The aluminum paper that is used is the one that comes ne rolls for kitchen.

To the center of this disc and in the side in which it bent the leftover of the aluminum paper sticks a plastic tube of about 20 cm in length. The tube can be fixed with glue or other average ones as screws of flat head.

Procedure
The electrophorus of Volta will work biem in day droughts. On the contrary a sacdor of hair is due to use, simply all the set by a good short while is blown aobre and soon procedde to take to end the expeimento.

In order to operate the electrophorus, the leaf of plastic is placed on a table and biem rubs its surface with a fabric piece of wool, piece of felt of a hat, etc. leans the disc on the plastic, holding it by the insulating handle. With the disc on the plastic, aluminum with the finger is touched to the paper. This allows the passage of the electrical charge of the disc to our body and to earth.

After to retire the finger we rose by the insulating handle, the disc will be loaded (electrified) and its load will be able to be used to realise several experiments as: to ignite a small neon lamp (NE-2), to produce small sparks, to move the needle of um electrometer, to load a bottle of Leyden, to rotate a elétrico mill, to attract the esferita of an electrostatic pendulum, to curve the water spurt that falls of a sink, to separate the leaves of an electroscope etc.

After using the disc in some experiment, this one will unload. In order to return to load it is enough again with colocrlo on the plastic leaf, to touch with the finger the aluminum edge and to quiet it of the plastic leaf. It is not necessary to rub the plastic leaf, because it does not lose his load (unless the atmosphere this humid one).

Simplified model
A simple model of electrophorus can be constructed using a plate of disposable aluminum, a glass of plastoform (or plastic) as insulating handle and a plate of plastoform, as it is seen in the photography.
